Skinny begging bird (Lake Flies Part 2)

About five years ago I first wrote about the problem we have here with lake flies. With the onset of COVID-19 and all the problems many have faced this year, I thought it was time to revisit the topic again. The subject came up today as I was leading morning prayer with our staff. As we were standing outside the lake flies were swarming all around us in droves. It was then I remembered again the words Jesus spoke in Matthew 6:25-27 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

If you want a real life example of this verse just come here and watch the African swallows. One day you’ll walk outside and see hundreds of them flying in a frenzy in the field in front of our office. It’s like a scene out of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. After a minute you realize the swallows are chasing and eating the lake flies. If God is faithful to feed these tiny little birds, will He not also meet your needs?

From what I’ve read in the news, this year has hit everyone in America hard. Some have lost their jobs, some have lost loved ones and everyone has lost some freedoms. Even here in Kenya the government made us close our school. This left us scrambling for money to keep going without the help of school fees. In the midst of these trials it can feel like God has abandoned you. But God promised us in Hebrews 13:5 “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

So instead of sitting there feeling depressed and abandoned, go outside and watch the birds. Have you ever seen a skinny bird, or one begging for food? I haven’t. If God keeps His promise to these creatures, He will be faithful keep His promise to you as well.
